Salik in Dubai 2026: Toll Gates, Rates & How to Pay

Salik Is No Longer a Flat Fee — Here’s the 2026 Reality

Dubai’s Salik road toll system used to be beautifully simple: AED 4 every time you passed under a gate. Those days are gone. Since early 2025, Salik has used dynamic pricing that changes with the time of day — and since June 2026, 5% VAT is included in every charged crossing. If you drive in Dubai, this guide covers every gate, every rate, and how to keep your bill down.

How Salik Works

Salik is an automatic toll system using RFID tags on your windscreen. There are no booths and no stopping — overhead gates scan your tag and deduct the fee from your prepaid Salik account. Every vehicle registered in Dubai needs a Salik tag (activation costs around AED 52.50 including VAT), and you top up the account online, via the app, or at petrol stations and banks.

Salik Rates in 2026 (VAT Included)

Since 1 June 2026, all charged crossings include 5% VAT:

  • Peak hours (Monday–Saturday, 6:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00): AED 6.30 per crossing
  • Off-peak (Monday–Saturday, 10:00–16:00 and 20:00–01:00): AED 4.20 per crossing
  • Sunday: AED 4.20 flat, all day outside the free window
  • 1:00–6:00 every night: free at all gates

The rate that applies is the one running at the exact moment you pass under the gate. During Ramadan, the free late-night window shifts (typically 2:00–7:00 AM) and peak windows adjust — check the official Salik channels each year.

All 10 Salik Gates

Dubai currently operates 10 toll gates:

  1. Al Barsha — Sheikh Zayed Road, near Mall of the Emirates
  2. Al Garhoud Bridge — Sheikh Rashid Road
  3. Al Maktoum Bridge — Umm Hurair Road
  4. Al Mamzar North — Al Ittihad Road (toward Sharjah)
  5. Al Mamzar South — Al Ittihad Road (toward Dubai)
  6. Al Safa (North) — Sheikh Zayed Road
  7. Al Safa South — Sheikh Zayed Road
  8. Airport Tunnel — Beirut Street
  9. Business Bay Crossing — Al Khail Road
  10. Jebel Ali — Sheikh Zayed Road, near Ibn Battuta

Two money-saving rules most drivers miss

  • Linked gates: crossing both Al Mamzar North and South — or both Al Safa gates — in the same direction within 60 minutes counts as a single charge.
  • Al Maktoum Bridge has its own special schedule: toll-free late at night and all day Sunday (it absorbs traffic when the Floating Bridge closes).

How to Register and Top Up

  1. Get a tag: buy online at salik.ae, through the Salik app, or at petrol stations and banks. Stick it to your windscreen as instructed.
  2. Activate: link the tag to your vehicle plate number and mobile number.
  3. Top up: recharge online, via the app, SMS, or at recharge points across the UAE. Set up auto-recharge so you never run dry.
  4. Monitor: the app and website show every crossing with its timestamp and charge — check monthly to spot billing surprises.

Driving through a gate with insufficient balance triggers a violation and fine, so keep the account topped up.

How Much Does the Average Driver Pay?

Do the maths before you sign a tenancy contract. A commuter crossing two gates each way at peak rates pays about AED 25 per day — roughly AED 550–650 a month. Shifting your commute 30 minutes outside peak windows, where possible, cuts that by a third. One widely cited estimate puts a two-gate peak commute at over AED 6,600 a year — a genuine factor in choosing where to live. See our Real Estate guides for how location affects total living costs.

Seven Ways to Pay Less Salik

  1. Shift your hours: even 30 minutes outside the 6–10 AM / 4–8 PM windows drops the rate from AED 6.30 to AED 4.20.
  2. Use the metro for part of the journey: park-and-ride plus metro beats a four-gate drive. Dubai’s transport upgrades keep improving the alternative.
  3. Learn the linked-gate rule: Mamzar and Safa pairs within an hour = one charge.
  4. Batch your trips: combine errands into one off-peak run instead of three separate peak trips.
  5. Carpool: split the toll cost with colleagues on the same route.
  6. Check the app monthly: disputed or duplicate charges can be raised with Salik customer service.
  7. Consider Sundays: flat AED 4.20 all day makes Sunday the cheapest driving day of the week.

Salik for Tourists and Rental Cars

Rental cars come with Salik tags fitted, and the rental company bills you for crossings — usually with an admin fee on top. Ask about the fee structure before you drive off, and remember that peak-hour crossings on Sheikh Zayed Road add up fast on a holiday budget. The Bottom Line

Salik in 2026 rewards timing: AED 6.30 at peak, AED 4.20 off-peak, free after 1 AM. Learn the ten gates, respect the clock, and the system is perfectly manageable. Ignore it, and it becomes one of your biggest monthly bills.
