UAE Green Visa 2026: Requirements, Benefits & How to Apply

UAE Green Visa 2026: Requirements, Benefits & How to Apply

What Is the UAE Green Visa?

The UAE Green Visa is a five-year, self-sponsored residence permit that lets skilled professionals, freelancers and investors live in the Emirates without needing an employer or company to sponsor them. Introduced as part of the UAE’s sweeping 2022 visa reforms and clarified further in an updated Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) guide in August 2026, it has become one of the most popular residency routes for independent professionals.

Unlike a standard employment visa — which is tied to your job and cancelled if you leave it — the Green Visa belongs to you. Change employers, go freelance, or take a career break: your residency stays intact for the full five-year term, and it is renewable.

Green Visa Categories and Requirements

Eligibility depends on which of the three official categories you apply under. Here are the current federal requirements:

1. Skilled Employees

Employed professionals can qualify if they meet all four conditions:

  • Valid employment contract with a UAE employer (private sector, government, semi-government or free zone entity).
  • Occupational classification: your role must fall under MOHRE skill levels 1, 2 or 3 — broadly, managerial, professional and technical occupations.
  • Education: at least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Salary: a minimum monthly salary of AED 15,000.

This route suits mid-career and senior professionals who want residency security independent of any single employer.

2. Freelancers and Self-Employed Professionals

Independent workers need:

  • A freelance or self-employment permit issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE).
  • Education: a bachelor’s degree, specialised diploma or equivalent.
  • Income or financial solvency: annual income from self-employment of at least AED 360,000 over the previous two years, or proof of sufficient financial resources to support yourself in the UAE.

This category is designed for consultants, creatives, developers, digital nomads and independent contractors who want a UAE base without being tied to one client or employer.

3. Investors and Business Partners

Investors qualify through approval under the relevant investor rating system, typically requiring a valid UAE commercial or free zone licence and proof of investment or partnership. Exact thresholds are assessed case by case through ICP or the emirate-level immigration authority.

Key Benefits of the Green Visa

  • Five years, renewable: double the length of a standard two-year employment visa.
  • Self-sponsorship: no employer sponsor required — your residency is independent of your job.
  • Family sponsorship: sponsor your spouse, children (sons up to age 25, unmarried daughters with no age limit) and first-degree relatives, subject to requirements.
  • Six-month grace period: if the visa is cancelled or expires, you get up to six months to remain in the UAE — far more generous than the old 30-day window.
  • Flexibility: switch jobs, start a business or freelance freely without reapplying for residency.

Documents You Will Need

  • Passport valid for at least six months
  • Recent passport-size photograph meeting UAE specifications
  • MOHRE work permit or freelance/self-employment permit (as applicable)
  • Employment contract or freelance contracts/invoices
  • Attested bachelor’s degree or diploma
  • Salary certificate or bank statements proving the income threshold
  • Medical fitness test result (completed in the UAE)
  • Valid health insurance

How to Apply: Step by Step

  1. Check your category: confirm you meet every requirement for skilled employee, freelancer or investor — partial eligibility is not enough.
  2. Gather and attest documents: get your degree attested and assemble contracts, permits and financial proof before you start.
  3. Apply through ICP or GDRFA: applications run through the ICP smart services portal (icp.gov.ae), the UAEICP app, or GDRFA in Dubai — or via an Amer centre in person.
  4. Pay the fees: application, issuance and Emirates ID fees apply (see below).
  5. Complete medical and biometrics: medical fitness test and Emirates ID biometrics in the UAE.
  6. Receive your permit: processing typically takes a few weeks once documents are approved.

Tip: if you already hold a UAE residence visa, do not cancel it until your Green Residency is approved.

Green Visa Fees and Processing Time

Total costs generally fall between AED 2,500 and AED 4,500, depending on the emirate and category — covering the application, residency issuance, medical test and Emirates ID. Processing usually takes two to four weeks from submission of complete documents. Fees are revised periodically, so confirm current charges on the ICP portal before applying.

Green Visa vs Golden Visa: Which Is Right for You?

The two visas are often confused. In short:

  • Green Visa (5 years): lower bar — AED 15,000/month salary for skilled workers. Ideal for established professionals and freelancers.
  • Golden Visa (10 years): higher bar — AED 30,000/month salary for skilled employees, or AED 2 million in property or investments. Ideal for high earners, investors and exceptional talent.

If you meet the Golden Visa thresholds, it offers double the validity. If not, the Green Visa delivers the same self-sponsored freedom for five years. Read our UAE Golden Visa 2026 guide for the full comparison.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Applying with a salary just under AED 15,000 — the threshold is strict and allowances may not count.
  • Submitting an unattested degree — attestation is mandatory.
  • Cancelling your current visa before approval — always wait for the Green Residency to be issued.
  • Assuming rules are identical in every emirate — document checklists can differ slightly between ICP and GDRFA Dubai.
