Ras Al Khaimah Adventure Guide: Jebel Jais, Ziplines & Beach Resorts

Ras Al Khaimah Adventure Guide: The UAE’s Thrill Capital

While Dubai grabs the headlines, the northern emirate of Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) has quietly become the UAE’s adventure capital. Home to Jebel Jais — the country’s highest mountain — plus the world’s longest zipline, vast desert dunes, mangrove kayaking and some of the region’s best-value beach resorts, RAK deserves far more than a day trip. This is your complete 2026 adventure guide.

Jebel Jais: The Mountain

Rising 1,934 metres in the Hajar range, Jebel Jais is the UAE’s highest peak. The 30 km mountain road to the top is an attraction in itself — a serpentine ribbon of perfect tarmac with hairpins, viewpoints and photo stops. Go for sunrise or sunset; midday heat haze dulls the views. The best months are November to April.

Jais Flight — The World’s Longest Zipline

The headline act: a 2.83 km zipline (Guinness-certified world record) launching from 1,680 metres above sea level. You fly face-down, superman-style, at up to 160 km/h, landing on a suspended platform mid-mountain.

  • Price: from around AED 325–399 (book online in advance; weekends cost more).
  • Closed: Monday and Tuesday.
  • Requirements: minimum weight 40 kg, maximum 120 kg, minimum height 130 cm; original passport or Emirates ID required; athletic clothing and closed-toe shoes mandatory — no skirts, dresses or sandals.
  • Not suitable for pregnancy, heart conditions or back problems.

Jais Sky Tour

Prefer to sit? The Sky Tour strings six ziplines across 5 km of mountain scenery at up to 60 km/h — about two hours of soaring, including a 1,250-metre sky bridge. Tickets from around AED 450; combos with Jais Flight available.

Jais Sledder

The region’s longest toboggan ride: an 1,840-metre track of twists and drops reaching 40 km/h. Single rides around AED 45–50, triple-ride passes ~AED 100–120. Great for families (and anyone whose courage failed on the zipline).

More on the Mountain

  • Jebel Jais Viewing Deck Park: the UAE’s highest viewpoint, with food trucks and telescopes (~AED 5 entry).
  • 1484 by Puro: the UAE’s highest restaurant at 1,484 metres — book ahead.
  • Hiking trails: marked routes from easy (Samar, 1.2 km) to moderate (Sidir, 6 km).
  • Bear Grylls Explorers Camp: survival-skills courses and overnight mountain cabins.

Desert Adventures

RAK’s desert is wilder and emptier than Dubai’s. Book an evening safari with dune bashing, camel rides and a Bedouin-style camp dinner, or go full luxury at a desert resort like The Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi — private plunge pools overlooking oryx and gazelle roaming the reserve.

Water & Coast

  • Mangrove kayaking: Paddle the calm channels of RAK’s mangrove forests at sunrise — herons, crabs and total tranquillity.
  • Beach resorts: RAK’s resorts (Waldorf Astoria, Rixos Bab Al Bahr, InterContinental) offer some of the UAE’s best value for beachfront luxury — often 30–40% cheaper than equivalent Dubai properties.
  • Diving & fishing: The Musandam-facing coast has decent dive sites and deep-sea fishing trips.

Where to Stay

  • Adventure base: Hampton by Hilton Marjan Island or Citymax RAK — clean, cheap, well-located.
  • Blowout: The Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert or Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah.
  • Mountain: Camp 1770 glamping or Bear Grylls cabins on Jebel Jais itself.

Getting There & Around

RAK is 60–90 minutes from Dubai by car via the E311/E611. Public transport exists but is limited — renting a car (from ~AED 120/day) is strongly recommended, especially for Jebel Jais. Taxis within RAK are cheap and metered.

Sample 2-Day Itinerary

  • Day 1: Morning drive to Jebel Jais → Jais Flight or Sky Tour → lunch at 1484 by Puro → Viewing Deck Park at sunset → overnight mountain camp or RAK city.
  • Day 2: Sunrise mangrove kayaking → beach resort pool/beach afternoon → desert safari evening (or drive back to Dubai).
